Everton may have walked away with the result, but the 1–0 victory over Wolves was anything but comfortable. It was a tense and demanding contest from the opening whistle, with both sides having spells where they looked capable of changing the outcome.
The winning margin may have been only one goal, but the intensity of the game told a completely different story. Wolves refused to make life easy for Everton, staying compact, working tirelessly without the ball and continuing to threaten whenever they found space to attack.
Speaking to the media after the final whistle, David Moyes praised his team’s determination but admitted that the match had demanded far more from Everton than the scoreline might suggest.
“It was a really tough game for us,” Moyes said in this post Match interview. “You look at the score and you think it was a narrow victory, but you have to understand the amount of work that went into getting that result. Wolves made it difficult for us in so many areas.”
Moyes explained that Everton had to remain patient because Wolves were extremely disciplined in their approach.
“They stayed organised, they competed for every ball and they didn’t allow us to have everything our own way. We had to keep working and keep believing that eventually an opportunity would come.”
The Everton boss also reserved praise for the Wolves players, acknowledging the quality and commitment they showed throughout the contest.
“They deserve a lot of credit,” he added. “There were moments when they defended brilliantly and moments when they caused us problems. Their players showed a lot of character. For us, getting through a game like this is important because these are the matches where you have to find another level.”
But then came the question that changed the tone of the conversation.
A journalist asked Moyes what he really made of Wolves and whether their performance had surprised him.
Moyes paused before giving an answer that became the headline moment of the press conference.
“There’s something about Wolves this season that even surprised me,” he said. “They have totally transformed the way they play. When you watch them now, you can see a team that has improved in so many areas.”
Moyes went further, suggesting that the biggest difference wasn’t simply tactical.
“You can see the mentality has changed. They look much more organised, much more together and much more prepared to stay in the game when things aren’t going their way.”
According to Moyes assessment, Wolves’ improvement was particularly noticeable in their discipline.
“They don’t lose their shape easily anymore. They stay connected. The players understand where they need to be, and that comes from work on the training ground. The manager and his staff have clearly put a lot of work into the players’ mentality.”
That observation appeared to surprise many because Everton had just eliminated Wolves, yet Moyes was spending considerable time praising the side he had defeated.
He continued: “You don’t become that organised by accident. There has clearly been a lot of work done behind the scenes. The players are buying into it, and you can see the confidence growing.”
For Wolves supporters, that was arguably the most intriguing part of the interview. Despite the defeat, the opposing manager was portraying Wolves as a side that had undergone a significant transformation.
Everton ultimately had the goal and the result, but Wolves left the match with something that Moyes appeared to recognise, evidence of a team becoming harder to break down, more disciplined and mentally stronger.
