THE SPFL RELEASE WHAT HAISSEM HASSAN SAID TO JAMES PENRICE ON THE PITCH THAT CAUSED THE CONFRONTATION, – IT’S HEARTBREAKING

Viral footage has reignited controversy surrounding the heated confrontation between Haissem Hassan and James Penrice during Rangers’ dramatic 3–0 victory over Celtic at Ibrox, with fresh attention now being placed on the moments that sparked the incident.

The Old Firm clash had already produced plenty of drama before tensions boiled over during the second half. Rangers were firmly in control of the League Cup quarter-final, but the atmosphere became increasingly heated as Celtic struggled to find a way back into the contest.

The flashpoint came after Hassan went down following a challenge involving Rangers defender Dujon Sterling. The Celtic player appeared frustrated by the challenge, and what happened immediately afterwards quickly transformed the situation into a confrontation involving several players.

Penrice became involved as the incident developed, with Hassan confronting the Rangers player. Within seconds, teammates from both sides rushed towards the pair as tempers flared on the pitch.

However, footage circulating online has now brought renewed attention to the exchange between the two players.

The SPFL has indicated that the circumstances surrounding the incident are being examined, including allegations concerning comments allegedly made by Hassan before the confrontation escalated.

SPFL STATEMENT

In a statement addressing the controversy, the SPFL:

The SPFL is aware of footage circulating from the League Cup quarter-final involving Haissem Hassan and James Penrice. The governing body has reviewed the available footage and is examining the circumstances surrounding the confrontation between the two players.

“As part of that process, consideration is being given to the sequence of events that preceded the confrontation, including comments that were allegedly exchanged between the players on the pitch.

“The SPFL takes matters concerning player conduct seriously and expects all participants in its competitions to maintain the highest standards of behaviour, regardless of the intensity or importance of a fixture.

“Where evidence indicates that an incident may warrant further consideration under the applicable disciplinary procedures, the appropriate process will be followed.

“The SPFL will not prejudge the outcome of any disciplinary matter. Any player who is subject to proceedings will have the opportunity to respond to the allegations and provide any relevant information or evidence.

“We recognise the significant public interest surrounding matches of this nature, but it would be inappropriate to comment further while any review or disciplinary process remains ongoing.

“The SPFL will communicate any formal disciplinary decision through the appropriate channels once the relevant procedures have been completed.”

The alleged words said by hassan have become one of the biggest talking points surrounding the incident, particularly because supporters watching the footage have been attempting to work out exactly what was said before Hassan and Penrice confronted each other.

However, the precise words exchanged cannot be established from footage alone unless the audio is sufficiently clear or an official disciplinary body confirms them. That distinction is important because several different claims have circulated online since the match.

The confrontation itself is much clearer.

Hassan appeared visibly frustrated after the challenge, while Penrice became involved shortly afterwards. Their exchange then attracted the attention of nearby players, turning the initial incident into a wider gathering of Rangers and Celtic players.

The referee quickly intervened before the situation could develop further.

Although there were no dismissals arising from the confrontation, the incident added another controversial chapter to an already intense Old Firm afternoon.

Rangers ultimately produced a commanding performance, defeating Celtic 3–0 and progressing in the League Cup. The result was particularly significant because of the rivalry between the two clubs and the enormous expectations surrounding the fixture.

Yet the final score has not been the only subject of discussion.

The confrontation involving Hassan and Penrice has continued to attract attention because of the possibility that something said before the players came together may have contributed to the escalation.

Supporters from both clubs have offered contrasting interpretations of the footage. Some Celtic fans have argued that the events leading to Hassan’s reaction need to be considered before judging the player, while Rangers supporters have questioned whether the alleged comments crossed a disciplinary line.

The circulation of short video clips has also intensified the debate. Different angles appear to show different stages of the confrontation, making it difficult for supporters to establish the complete sequence simply by watching social-media footage.

If the SPFL does formally investigate the matter, the referee’s report, broadcast footage and any other available evidence could become important in determining whether further disciplinary action is appropriate.

For now, the incident remains one of the most discussed moments from Rangers’ 3–0 victory.

What began with a challenge and a moment of frustration quickly developed into a confrontation between rival players, with Hassan and Penrice at the centre of the controversy.

And as the footage continues to spread online, supporters are now waiting to discover whether the governing body will take further action  or whether the yellow cards shown on the day will remain the final disciplinary outcome.
