Kevin Phillips did not hold back after Sunderland’s extraordinary 5–3 defeat to Manchester City, with the Sunderland legend delivering a brutally honest assessment of Régis Le Bris’ tactics and admitting that he is becoming concerned about the difference between this Sunderland side and the team supporters watched last season.
Speaking immediately after the final whistle, Phillips was clearly disappointed by the result.
But it was not the defeat itself that appeared to frustrate him most.
It was the way Sunderland allowed the game to slip away.
“Look, Manchester City are Manchester City,” Phillips said in the post-match interview. “Nobody is expecting Sunderland to come here and dominate them for 90 minutes. But when you get yourself back into a game like this, you have to show more aggression. You have to show that fighting spirit.”
And Sunderland certainly had their opportunities.
After Enzo Fernández gave City the lead, Brian Brobbey responded almost immediately.
When Rayan Cherki restored City’s advantage, Brobbey again dragged Sunderland level.
At 2–2, the visitors were right in the contest.
The intensity was extraordinary. Both teams were attacking, the momentum kept changing hands and Sunderland repeatedly showed that they were capable of hurting one of the Premier League’s biggest sides.
But City eventually found another gear.
Antoine Semenyo scored before half-time and then struck again early in the second half to put City 4–2 ahead.
Yet Sunderland refused to disappear.
Brobbey completed his hat-trick in the 59th minute, making it 4–3 and giving Sunderland supporters fresh belief that an astonishing comeback could still happen.
That was the moment Phillips felt Sunderland had to change the game.
Instead, he believes they allowed City to take control again.
“That’s the bit that disappoints me,” Phillips continued. “You’ve got it at 4–3. You’ve just scored again. You’ve got momentum. You’ve got belief. So why are you allowing the game to flip back in Manchester City’s favour?”
His criticism of Le Bris then became even more direct.
“I thought the tactics were too poor at certain moments. You cannot keep giving a team like Manchester City opportunities to take control again. You have to recognise the moment. You have to change something. You have to make the players more aggressive.”
Those comments would already have been enough to create a huge reaction.
But Phillips was not finished.
Asked whether he believed Sunderland had improved compared with last season, the former Sunderland striker gave an answer that could easily become the biggest talking point from the interview.
“Honestly? I don’t think this Sunderland team is as competitive as the one we saw last season,” he admitted.
“That might be difficult for some people to hear, but that’s what I’m seeing. The aggression isn’t the same. The intensity isn’t the same. Last season, when Sunderland got themselves into a fight, you felt they were going to stay in that fight until the very end.”
Phillips then returned to the Manchester City defeat.
“Today, you get yourself back into the game again and again. You score three goals away against Manchester City. Brobbey scores a hat-trick. You are still alive at 4–3. But then you allow the game to go away from you again.”
That, according to Phillips, is where Sunderland must improve.
“I’m not saying Manchester City aren’t a fantastic team. Of course they are. But that’s not the point. The point is the fighting spirit. When you have taken control of a game, you cannot just hand it back.”
And Sunderland supporters would know exactly what he meant.
This was not a match where Sunderland simply sat back and accepted defeat.
They scored three times.
They fought back repeatedly.
Brobbey produced one of the standout individual performances of the afternoon, becoming the first Sunderland player to score a Premier League hat-trick since Jermain Defoe in 2016.
But ultimately, five goals conceded meant Sunderland left Manchester empty-handed.
Haaland’s late strike finally ended their resistance and sealed City’s 5–3 victory.
Phillips’ final words were perhaps the most revealing.
“Régis has to get that aggression back into this team. Because Sunderland have shown today that they can score, they can compete and they can cause Manchester City problems. But if you keep allowing matches to turn like this, you are always going to make life difficult for yourself.”
For Sunderland fans, that may be the most uncomfortable conclusion from a remarkable afternoon.
The talent is there.
The attacking threat is there.
But Phillips believes the fight has to return.
And after a 5–3 defeat that Sunderland repeatedly looked capable of escaping, his criticism of Le Bris could hardly have come at a more explosive moment.
