West Ham supporters turned up the heat during Tuesday night’s clash with Wolverhampton Wanderers, creating a brutal chant aimed at one of the visiting players but the Wolves midfielder’s alleged response has now become the bigger talking point.
The atmosphere at London Stadium was already intense as West Ham chased their first Championship victory of the season. The Hammers eventually won 4-2, with Divine Mukasa scoring twice, while Marshall Munetsi also got on the scoresheet for Wolves.
The result provided plenty of entertainment on the pitch, but supporters also generated attention with a chant aimed directly at a Wolves player. The song mocked his physical presence, questioned his effectiveness and made reference to a huge transfer fee.
The chant reportedly went:
“He’s small, he’s fast, he falls at every touch! Munetsi, Munetsi! Paid forty million quid and he still can’t do much! Munetsi, Munetsi!”
The lyrics quickly became a talking point among supporters, particularly because they combined traditional football terrace humour with criticism of the player’s performances and perceived value.
Marshall Nyasha Munetsi was the man at the centre of the controversy. The Zimbabwe international is a physically imposing midfielder, listed at around 1.87–1.88 metres, and has become an established part of the Wolves squad. Current records also show that he scored against West Ham in Tuesday’s 4-2 defeat.
Munetsi’s reported response added another twist to the story. Rather than appearing angry about the chant, he allegedly replied with humour:
“I hear them singing from the stands it’s all part of football. But if you’re going to waste your breath on a chant about me, at least get the transfer fee right!”
That final line is what has particularly caught the attention of supporters. Instead of allowing the chant to dominate the conversation, Munetsi appeared to turn the criticism into a joke about the accuracy of the alleged transfer figure.

Munetsi’s performance on the night also gave him something positive to take from the difficult evening. He scored Wolves’ first goal as César Peixoto’s side attempted to fight their way back into the match, although West Ham ultimately proved too strong.
For West Ham supporters, the victory was the main prize. Mukasa’s double helped the Hammers secure their first league win of the campaign, while Jarrod Bowen and Konstantinos Mavropanos were also on target.
For Munetsi, however, the evening produced a strange mixture of frustration and amusement. He found the net, but his side still left London Stadium empty-handed — and the chant aimed at him has ensured that his name remains part of the conversation after the final whistle.
Footballers regularly become targets for opposition supporters, particularly when a player is associated with a significant transfer fee or is perceived to have underperformed. Chants can be harsh, but they are also part of the traditional atmosphere surrounding English football.
Munetsi’s reported reaction, if accurately attributed, demonstrates another side of that culture: the ability of a player to absorb criticism without allowing it to become a personal confrontation.
And with Wolves and West Ham certain to meet again in the future, supporters may already be wondering whether the chant will return.
For now, though, West Ham have the three points, Wolves have plenty to analyse, and Munetsi has provided the perfect punchline to a night that produced plenty of drama both on and off the pitch.
