In a night filled with accolades and recognition, Jobe Bellingham has been named the Championship Young Player of the Season at the EFL Awards, marking a significant achievement for the 19-year-old midfielder in his second season with Sunderland. Bellingham triumphed over competitors Shea Charles of Sheffield Wednesday and CJ Egan-Riley from Burnley, showcasing his impressive development and contributions to the team.
Reflecting on his victory, Bellingham expressed gratitude and enthusiasm for the future. “I’m grateful to win the award,” he stated. “It’s been a really good season, and I’ve just tried to learn from my teammates and do the best I can.” He emphasized the impact of Sunderland’s coaching staff, particularly the guidance from the manager, which has instilled a strong structure within the team. “I’ve learnt a lot from the gaffer. He has brought great structure to our team. I’ve learned a lot out of possession. I’ve got a lot bigger physically which has helped as well, and I feel like I’ve progressed a lot.”
Bellingham’s ambition is clear as he aims for play-off success and a potential promotion to the Premier League with Sunderland. “It’s great to play for a club as big as Sunderland. It’s a huge opportunity to play in front of such a huge fan base every week; they’re so passionate. Hopefully, we can end the season on a high now. Playing in the Premier League, especially for Sunderland, is a massive motivation. In my eyes, they deserve to be in the Premier League,” he added.
Sunderland’s success at the EFL Awards did not end with Bellingham. Teammate Chris Rigg was honored as the Championship Apprentice of the Season, outshining contenders Ronan Kpakio from Cardiff City and Souleymane Sidibe from Stoke City. Rigg shared his excitement about receiving the award, stating, “I’m buzzing to win the award it’s always nice to pick individual awards up and it’s nice to be recognized. Hopefully, we’re all picking up another award at the end of the season. We’re looking forward now and hopefully we can pick three points up against QPR and go into the play-offs on a high.”
In addition to individual accolades, Sunderland also celebrated the recognition of their players in the Championship Team of the Season. Bellingham was the sole representative from Sunderland in the prestigious XI, while Burnley and Leeds United each had three players featured, highlighting their strong performances throughout the season. Sheffield United and Norwich City each contributed two players to the team.
